Today, five military transport planes carrying military aid for the Lebanese Army from the United States and its Arab allies arrived at the Beirut airport. The military supplies are believed to include ammunition for automatic rifles and heavy weapons, spare parts for military helicopters and night-vision equipment. Some may see this as a sincere gesture coming from the American government to help the Lebanese citizenry in a time of crisis. However, when I remember the atrocity which occurred nearly one year ago in Lebanon and the immense humanitarian crisis the Lebanese people endured at the hands of the Israeli military, I begin to doubt how sincere this gesture really is. My negative insights about the recent U.S. aid to the Lebanese government is due to the fact that last summer, while the bombs were falling on a magnitude far greater than what we are witnessing today, America stood silent and complacent to Prime Minister Siniora’s cry for help. The only reason aid was given this time around is because the political atmosphere is different and America is only looking out for its own interests in the region.
